Best Phone Plans for Students in Canada (2026)

Students get squeezed on phone plans for two reasons: no credit history and no cash. The good news is that the cheapest plans in Canada are prepaid and don’t run a credit check at all — which means the budget option and the no-credit-check option are usually the same plan.

The short answer

Public Mobile is the best all-round student pick. Two tiers are worth your attention: $30/month for 35GB at 4G speeds, or $35/mo for 50GB if you want 5G. Both are on the Telus network, both are Canada-wide, and neither runs a credit check or ties you to a contract. It’s digital-only, which is fine if you’re comfortable managing things in an app.

If your campus and home are both on Wi-Fi, the $30/35GB tier is almost certainly the one — you are unlikely to touch 35GB, let alone 50.

If you can verify as a student, check Koodo first. Koodo runs a student deal at $40/month for 10GB of 5G, down from $50. It buys you something Public Mobile doesn’t have: real stores and phone support. Note the price includes $10/month of discounts, one of which requires paying by pre-authorised bank withdrawal.

If you need the absolute cheapest, Lucky Mobile starts at $19/month for 500MB and runs $25/month for 5GB — small buckets, but with unlimited Canada-wide talk and text, no contract and no credit check.

Watch the other direction, though: Bell and Rogers each added a $40 fee for buying or upgrading a phone in a store, over the phone, or on chat. Buying online, self-serve, with your own phone avoids it. The details are in our device handling fee explainer.

Why prepaid suits students

• No credit check. Postpaid plans run your credit, which is a problem if you’re 19 with no history. Prepaid skips this entirely.
• No contract. You can leave any month — useful if you’re going home for the summer or abroad on exchange.
• No surprise bills. You pay up front, so you can’t run up overages.
• Bring your own phone. Keep using the phone you have instead of financing a new one at $30+/month on top.

If you want a new phone financed

This is the one case where a Big Three student plan can make sense. Rogers’ 5G Mobile Student plan (~$65/month for 60GB) and Bell’s Student Select (~$60/month for 128GB) exist mainly to bundle device financing. Telus also runs student discounts verified through Student Beans. These three figures date from our July 2026 check and were not re-confirmed in this pass — treat them as indicative and price them on the carrier’s own student page.

Be honest with yourself about the math though: a $65/month plan over a four-year degree is over $3,000. A $35 plan plus a used phone is often the better financial decision by a wide margin.

How much data do you actually need?

Campus Wi-Fi covers most of your day, which means students often over-buy data. If you’re on Wi-Fi in class, in the library, and at home, you may only need 10–20GB — not 70. Run your habits through our data calculator before committing.

Student-specific tips

• Check for a student discount on any plan before signing — Student Beans and SPC verification unlock offers at several carriers.
• Split a family plan. If your family is already with a carrier, adding a line to their account is often cheaper than a standalone plan.
• Don’t pay for US roaming you won’t use unless you’re actually crossing the border regularly.
• Set a calendar reminder for when any promotional pricing ends — that’s when bills quietly jump.

Our recommendation

For most students: Public Mobile at $30 for 35GB, or $35/mo for 50GB if you want 5G. If you want a store you can walk into and can verify as a student, Koodo’s $40/10GB student deal. If money is genuinely tight: Lucky Mobile from $19. Only consider a Big Three student plan if you specifically need to finance a phone — and run the total cost first.
