Best Phone Plans in Ontario (September 2026)

Two things changed the maths in Ontario this summer. The flanker brands (Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus) all raised prices $5/mo in July 2026, and the CRTC’s June ban on activation and cancellation fees made leaving your carrier cheaper than it has ever been. The value has shifted to the prepaid and value carriers — and moving to one now costs nothing to do.

No carrier prices Ontario as its own market, so the table below is the national lineup rather than an Ontario-only one — the two provinces that do get their own pricing are Alberta, where Freedom is cheaper, and Quebec, where Videotron sells tiers unavailable anywhere else. What is specific to Ontario is the timing.

Quick take

For most Ontarians, Freedom Mobile’s 70GB plan at $40/mo is the value leader right now — it includes Canada-US-Mexico usage, and buying a phone from Freedom adds 25GB of bonus data at the same price. If you’d rather be on the Telus network, Public Mobile is the honest runner-up.

Who each plan suits

  • Public Mobile$35/mo for 50GB on the Telus network, the cheapest solid plan on the list. Trade-off: self-serve only, so no store to walk into and no phone support.
  • Fizz$35/mo for 40GB, or $45/mo for 100GB; it sells data on a slider, so those are two points on a ladder rather than the whole menu. Note that in Ontario Fizz rides Freedom’s network, not Videotron’s, so judge it on Freedom’s coverage rather than on its Quebec reputation.
  • Freedom Mobile$40/mo for 70GB with Canada-US-Mexico usage included. Trade-off: the network is thinner outside cities, though it roams onto other networks beyond its own footprint.
  • Koodo and Fido — both $50/mo for 60GB, on the Telus and Rogers networks respectively, and at this much data the cheapest way to get a real store and device financing on a Big Three network. Koodo’s own 10GB tier is $40/mo if you use less. You’re paying about $15/mo for that convenience. That price assumes you pay by pre-authorised bank withdrawal — without it, budget $60.

Before you switch, two fees

The June 12, 2026 ban means no activation or cancellation charge on a plan with no subsidized device — which is what makes this summer’s flanker price rise worth acting on rather than absorbing. Bell and Rogers have since added a $40 charge for selling or upgrading a phone in a store, on the phone or on chat, and Telus a $15 SIM fee on new activations; going online with your own handset avoids the $40 entirely. The fee ban explainer and device handling fee explainer have the limits. Not sure whether you’re overpaying today? How we verify prices

Every plan carries a last verified date, shown at the bottom of the table. We re-check carrier sites at the start of each month and during major sale events. Where a figure in the prose above is a price, it renders from the same database as the table, so the two can’t drift apart.

Sources checked: August 21, 2026. Freedom’s Ontario lineup was confirmed on that date across both the bring-your-own-phone and the get-a-new-phone lineups. Every other plan in the table carries its own verification date in our dataset and is re-checked on its own cycle rather than all on the date above. Prices change without notice — always confirm on the carrier’s own site before signing up.
