Freedom Mobile vs Public Mobile (2026): Cheapest Isn't Always Best
Freedom Mobile and Public Mobile are the two most aggressive value carriers in Canada right now, and they’re competing hard. Freedom usually wins on headline price; Public Mobile usually wins on where your phone actually works. Here’s how to pick.
The short answer
If you live and stay in a major city, Freedom Mobile is often the better value — its promotional pricing is genuinely the cheapest in the country, frequently including Canada-US-Mexico usage. If you travel, commute outside the city, or live rurally, Public Mobile is the safer choice thanks to the Telus network behind it.

Network: city strength vs national reach
Freedom Mobile (owned by Quebecor) built its own network, which is strong in and around major urban centres and has expanded considerably. Outside cities it relies more on roaming, and coverage is thinner in rural and remote areas.
Two things to settle before you compare prices. First, Freedom sells in Alberta, BC, Manitoba and Ontario only — its own site offers no other province. In Quebec, Quebecor sells Videotron instead; in Saskatchewan and Atlantic Canada, Freedom simply isn’t available, so Public Mobile wins by walkover. Second, Freedom prices the same tier differently in each market it does serve. At $40 you get 70GB in Ontario and BC, 100GB in Manitoba, and 125GB in Alberta — all verified against Freedom’s own plans page on August 21, 2026. Public Mobile’s ladder, by contrast, is identical nationwide.
Public Mobile rides on the Telus network, which is among the best in Canada for rural and highway coverage.
That’s the whole trade-off in a sentence: Freedom buys you a lower price, Public Mobile buys you fewer dead zones.
Where Freedom wins
- Price. Freedom’s promotional plans are regularly the cheapest mainstream option in Canada, and they frequently bundle Canada-US-Mexico usage — genuinely valuable if you cross the border.
- Aggressive promos. Freedom changes offers often and tends to lead the market on price during sale periods.
Where Public Mobile wins
- Coverage, especially outside cities.
- Consistency. Telus-network performance is predictable; you’re less likely to be surprised on a road trip.
- Points. Public Points reduce your future bills the longer you stay.
What they have in common
Both are digital-first with no meaningful in-store support, both are bring-your-own-phone friendly, and neither locks you into a contract. Both will save you serious money against a Big Three plan — often $25–35/month for the same data.
Before you switch: put your home address, workplace, and any regular routes into both coverage maps. Freedom’s price advantage disappears fast if you lose signal on your commute.
Who should pick which
- Urban, budget-first: Freedom Mobile — hard to beat on price.
- Cross-border traveller: Freedom, when its Can-US-Mex promos are running.
- Rural, suburban, or frequent highway driver: Public Mobile.
- You just want it to always work: Public Mobile.
